Have you ever done laundry, or fallen in a hole? I bet you’re nodding right now. Sure, you’ve put clothes in a washer, or maybe hand washed a pair of undies in a hotel sink once or twice. Sure, you’ve probably stumbled over a gopher hole, because hasn’t everyone? You know, you trip, and then you start to jog, because you just felt like jogging all of a sudden…. So take those experiences and cobble together the thought of hand washing a full sized fluffy towel and jeans. And every other piece of clothing you own. And take that gopher hole, and replace it with a pot hole on the sidewalk. Now, make that pot hole four feet deep and filled with trash (but luckily not running sewage). This is the hole that I fell into the other night (I fell on my friend, and in the hole, to be precise) while on a jog with two friends.
A hole. A four foot deep hole. Just there. On the side of the road. It was a quintessential – if you fall off a horse, get right back on – moment. After inspecting that we were not injured, and abandoning my water bottle to the great trash heap gods, we continued our jog.
I also walked barefoot on a beach last Sunday in what appeared to me to be thin white worms (Anyone have any idea what could look like thin white worms, but really be a harmless plant? Because I don't......).
I think that’s what’s special about being here – there are so many larger obstacles and uncertainties, that it puts lesser obstacles - like a shocking oven, beach worms, or a huge trash filled hole - into perspective.
I am delighted to be here.
