I am not a political analyst, and I want to preface my proceeding comments with the fact that pretty much everything I am about to say is based on word of mouth. You can check out my previous political fyi post a few weeks back.
The elections were originally “scheduled” for May 12th, which would have meant, constitutionally, that they would have had to be announced by the president on March 3.
So, as previously stated, the opposition has 2 big sticking points – electoral software and Guineans outside of Guinea voting. The opposition and the president were in talks in March, but the opposition pulled out around the 29th of March.
Now, (allegedly), the president is meeting with individual opposition leaders outside of Guinea. The thinking is that the president will try to persuade some of the leaders, or perhaps just one, to join him in announcing elections, so that he can claim that the elections have opposition support.
Protests have been scheduled, and canceled.
Again, this is in no way official or representative of the thoughts or feelings of any government or organization.
